Top 10 personalities to look out for
Improve the productivity of your meetings by learning how to differentiate a Multitasker from a Mobile Meeter

WHETHER online, over the phone or in person, keeping people engaged and productive during a meeting is always the goal.

Here is a Top 10 list of “unique” meeting personalities and some tips on improving your interactions with them during meetings:

1. Multitasker
Everyone is guilty of multitasking during a meeting. Some people are better at it than others.
When asked a question, the multitasker frequently responds with: “Sorry, I missed that. Can you repeat what you said?”
The Multitasker can be harder to engage online or over the phone than in person.
It is important to keep such people engaged and call on them often. Keeping them on their toes may decrease the amount of time they spend multitasking.

2. Mobile Meeter
The Mobile Meeter thinks nothing of conducting or attending meetings in the airport lounge or in the carpool line.
There are two keys to becoming a successful Mobile Meeter:
* Having conference details handy in an Outlook Calendar so you can quick-dial into a meeting, and
* Having a clear understanding of how to self-mute background noise.

3. Disrupter
By changing the topic or taking people down a side street, the Disrupter can sometimes uncover creative ideas or new ways of doing something.
But the Disrupter can also blow up an agenda and make other meeting participants irritable and cranky.
You will be able to spot the Disrupter easily as he often ends a sentence with, “...but I digress”.

4. Overbooked
This person doesn’t know how to say “no” to a meeting invite, so he attends them all, and is late to all of them!
The Overbooked generally greets team gatherings with: “Sorry, I had a meeting that ran late...”

5. Interrupter
When a good idea comes to mind, the Interrupter can’t wait to present it to the group, and he does it...right at that moment!
This personality is not inherently bad because, hey, it is a good idea.
But proceed with caution if you are calling the meeting: Combining the Interrupter with his distant relatives, Disrupter and Long-Winded, can create meeting anarchy.

6. Socialiser
The Socialiser is always prompt, always interested in where you live, how many children you have and what the weather is like in your town.
This individual is a great asset most of the time because he establishes rapport among participants and is willing to connect and collaborate.
But beware: You may have to politely decline an invitation to view the latest photos from the Socialiser’s Halloween party.

7. Maestro
This is the consummate professional who never starts a meeting without establishing a clear agenda and proper perspective.
At the end of a meeting, he clearly recaps the discussion, outlines next steps and identifies action items.
Even when the Maestro isn’t running a meeting, his organisational command shines through. The Maestro’s smooth skills can often help manage the Disrupter.

8. Timekeeper
No matter what is happening in a meeting, the Timekeeper is aware that someone “has a hard stop” and tries to motivate the team to complete the meeting at the predicted close.
The Timekeeper doesn’t always blend well with habitual latecomers like the Overbooked.

9. Snacker
Can you hear the Snacker crunching over the phone?
Kudos to the person who will work through lunch, but mind your table manners, please. And for those noisy phone eaters, learning about mute features is a requirement.

10. Social Networker
This personality is not to be confused with the Socialiser.
The days of meeting notes are changing. Many professionals are Tweeting or Facebooking live from a meeting.
If you fall into this personality type, here’s a note to self: It is bad form to tell your social network that a meeting sucks, especially if you have added the meeting host as a friend!

AT THE opening of the Odd Couple Marketing And Strategy Seminar for professional speakers, consultants and coaches, my co-presenter Alan Weiss (AW), gave this advice in the question-and-answer session.

Q: How do I build my business?

AW: “There has to be a market need for what you do, you must have the competency to meet the need, and you must have the passion to want to fulfil it. When these three things converge, you will have a brilliant career.

“It doesn’t matter what the economy is like; it doesn’t matter what the competition is like; it doesn’t matter what government regulation is like. The great thing about what we do is we control our own destiny.

So, look where those three things are and you will have a brilliant career.”

Q: How do I differentiate myself from other consultants and professional speakers?

AW: “When I started my career, quality circles were very big. I wrote an article called Why Quality Circles Make No Sense. It was completely contrary to popular opinion and was published in an instant.

“You don’t want to be the 457th person talking about how leaders have high integrity and they’re ethical. You want to talk about the facts. For example, right now, you have two kinds of people in leadership. You have people who are in their 50s and 60s near the top of organisations, who didn’t grow up with diversity, high-tech, and instantaneous communications and know nothing about it.

“You have a second era of leadership, who are people in their 30s and 40s and have never led in down times and have only led in boom economies. Now, given that juxtaposition of these senior people who aren’t used to some conditions and the next level of people, you have a leadership crisis.

“So, I’ve created a whole new route here. I can do that all day long. I can get anyone interested in what I have to say about leadership, or you name a topic and I’ll make it up. That’s what you have to do.

“So, if you want to enter a field, whether it’s team building or leadership or priority setting, diversity, whatever it is, come up with your own viewpoint. Read what people have said and then decide how you’ll be slightly different.”

Q: How do I build credibility with future clients when I am still fairly young and inexperienced?

AW: “I worked with a woman in my mentor programme. She said to me, ‘My problem is this: I don’t have a college degree; I’m younger than I look; I have no experience in any of these industries. How do I overcome that?’

“I said, ‘How does the prospect know this?’ And she said, ‘I tell them.’

“I said, ‘Stop doing that. So, what you do in your case is to publish. You start with position papers that you published and put them in your own press kit on your philosophy of leadership. You publish them in the local newspapers. You get up and speak somewhere, for free if you have to, on leadership. Have it taped, and then create a CD and white paper. This is what you do to create an aura of authority and accountability around yourself about whatever topic you like.’

“Never feel as though you’re going to walk in and sell to GE (General Electric). That’s not what you do. What you want is GE to come to you and say: ‘I’ve read something you have written.’”

IT HAS never been more important, given today’s challenging economic climate, to be appreciated by your boss.

But if you feel your potential or skills are undervalued or overlooked, perhaps it is time to get noticed at work.

Now is not the time to be invisible and let your work fall under your boss’s radar. Hays, a global company that provides specialist recruitment services, recommends the following tips to help you get noticed:

Positive impact

Remember when you first started on the job? You were out to make a good impression at every chance you got through the quality of your work.

It is time to get into that frame of mind again and use every opportunity to impress your manager with the good work you produce.

What is important, though, is that people notice your positive impact. Sell yourself at work by using the positive results you achieve.

For example, in meetings, make sure everyone knows what you are working on and what the outcomes are for the business.

Add value

Businesses are understandably looking at increasing revenue as well as process and cost improvements, so look to where you can add value. For example, if you work in the construction industry, then demonstrate business development or bid skills.

Upgrade your skills

Take every opportunity to volunteer for additional tasks that will not only improve your own employable skill base, but also make you even more invaluable to your employer.

Be honest

Don’t panic, or worse, try to hide it. Everyone makes mistakes, but it is how you handle the aftermath that can show your real strengths. Be honest with your manager, and go to him with a plan of how you intend to rectify the error.

Remember the basics

Arrive for work on time, show enthusiasm, look and act professionally and be organised. Don’t watch the clock and be prepared to do that little bit extra — it does get noticed.

There are some other things you can do to boost your profile in the office, such as keeping a record of your achievements, volunteering for committees, staying updated with trends in your industry, exceeding targets, getting work in before the deadline and improving any skills that are deficient.

Also get to know people in other departments. They could prove to be powerful allies.

YOU hear about a friend landing a great job through a headhunter and you wonder what he has that you haven’t.

How does someone become a target for headhunters? What do they look for?

These days, employers are very specific about their needs, and using headhunters to locate talent has become a popular option.

Here are some of the more employable traits that employers and headhunters seek:

Expertise in your field

When headhunters start mapping an industry, they talk to people within that industry.

They ask these people to recommend who they think is the best or is known for a specific line of work.

This means you need to be visible and be among the best in your field.

Some people do this by attending industry events and conferences.

Others write articles and speak at conferences, so they are known and looked up to for their opinions and views.

Value-added skills

In this multi-cultural and diverse environment, some profiles stand out even more.

Headhunters seek people with skills, experience or exposure that can add value to their clients’ organisations.

This includes overseas postings, assignments or educational exposure and the ability to speak other languages.

“As headhunters, we often see one candidate losing out to another just based on some of these attributes,” says Mr Mark Lam, principal consultant at BTI Consultants.

He recommends that young managers gain overseas exposure and be willing to live and work abroad.

Positive image

While social networking sites such as LinkedIn and Facebook are popular, people in senior or high-profile positions must be vigilant in monitoring what gets published about themselves.

Also monitor what your children say about you in sites like Facebook. Their comments may be fine in a social setting but if you are interviewing for a job, some personal information is best kept private.

Background

Where you come from in terms of education, family background and your social circles are important in some jobs.

Some headhunters want to know more about your background and family circumstances because they know that sometimes it just takes one family member to influence a candidate from taking a job.

Employment status

A company usually uses headhunters when it wants to reach passive candidates who are not actively looking for a change.

From a headhunter’s perspective, being unemployed can make you less attractive as a candidate.

However, it is prudent to discuss your desire to move from your current role only with those you trust.

People you know

The headhunting profession thrives on connections, so whom you know is important.

Stay on friendly terms with headhunters; they will remember you and keep you in their contact base.

Experience

You would have spent a substantial time in a role, job or company to make a sufficient impact and build a successful track record.

For a more senior position, employers are probably looking for depth of experience.

However, on the flip side, headhunters and employers can also consider breadth of experience a plus, as it can point to a candidate’s versatility and adaptability to different challenges and environments and cultures.

Strategic career move

Be strategic with your career move.

Don’t get enticed by just the lure of an attractive package or title. While you know this is common sense, even very senior-level candidates make this mistake.

Consider longer-term impact, employability and lifestyle changes when you accept an offer.

Credibility of headhunter

The term “headhunting” can be used rather loosely. Just approaching a prospect about an available job isn’t really headhunting.

Check out the headhunter before you divulge any information about yourself.

Company reputation, experience in the business and reputation of the senior leadership team are all factors that separate a good headhunter from one who is just trying to earn a fee.

Career decisions are big decisions, and getting headhunted is just the start of that process. Be open to discussion and be wise.

15,000 applied for 800 IR jobs..

OVER 15,000 jobseekers handed in applications to Resorts World at Sentosa (RWS) during the four-day Career 2009 and Education 2009 fair as of yesterday afternoon.

At stake? More than 800 jobs at the Sentosa integrated resort, of which about 400 were for game-table dealing croupiers.

Also up for grabs were 400 full- and part-time Positions in the Universal Studios theme park opening in the resort.

RWS was one of 400 employers at the fair in Suntec Convention Centre that started last Thursday. About 15,000 jobs were available at the fair, which 400,000 people attended in its first three days.

RWS said that it would hire 10,000 people when the resort opens early next year. It will be ramping up recruitment in the middle of this year. -- MY PAPER

Let's do a spotlight on ST701, a property portal by Singapore Press Holdings, for finding, selling, or renting property in Singapore. ST701 stands out from other Internet-based property classifieds, because ST701 is established by Singapore Press Holdings, the country's main vendor for the local newspapers and magazines that feed the population. Coming from a very established Classified Ads (C.A.T.S.) that comes with the Singapore Straits Times, ST701 assures the browser of a comprehensive e-marketplace with the most comprehensive and interesting marketplace for products and services, and in this case, property-related information.

With the current economic downturn, I thought it a good opportunity to check out the Singapore Real Estate, on the prices of property in Singapore.

ST701 Property, at the first glance, brought my attention to the 'PROPERTY HIGHLIGHTS' section, with the heading "Good Time to Buy An Exec Condo?" Clearly it was one of my considerations so I digest the useful article on the spot. I then went and did a search of the latest condominiums available for sale. I wanted to search for "Condo" that were "Freehold" and located in the eastern area of Singapore. Fortunately advance search allowed me to do this, and in a jiffy I found the latest listings for my choice search.

The additional feature of having photos of the Condominiums, as well as the option to "Add to Favorites" and "Compare" helped me to discern between the various condominiums. This also helps me to track the condo for viewing later, perhaps with my family or with my friend or my property agent.

The condo prices are still pretty steep, for freehold type, so I extended my search to HDB properties in the east. That was also easily searched, and suddenly the dream of a new home seems feasible after all!

As someone who does most of her shopping online, I am thrilled to find that St701 caters to a wide spectrum of needs that anyone could have!

This website is the e-marketplace for jobs, property, cars, products and services.

Its clear-cut layout ensures that whatever you need to look for is just a click away. On the main page, you will find 4 tabs leading to Jobs, Cars, Property and Shops.

My personal favourite is, of course, the Shops tab. A whole host of retailers providing both off and online shopping. Under the Pets section there are grooming services, pet sitters and pet products. I won’t be surprised if many people including me are not aware the presence of one of the biggest local classifieds on the internet.

If you are wondering what does ST701 stands for, ST is an abbreviation which is taken from The Straits Times which is an identity of Singapore Press Holdings national English newspaper. The numbers 701 symbolises a search experience of 7 days a week at the 01 place that a user may get. ST701 has a long history of establishments as far as 1969 and its milestones can be summarised by the following picture:

That is so much on the introduction of ST701. Now I am going to write a short review of one of its section that is ST701 Property website.

After browsing for some time, I am impressed with the website which is apart from being an advertising portal; it does provide useful information for buyers or sellers to find out everything about Singapore real estate. For example, it is on one of the “Useful Links” shortcut from the website that I am able to find the following chart from URA:

From an investor point of view, the chart can give a feel of the overall price index of property in Singapore by type. After a fast ran up of prices in 2006 and 2007, now prices seem to slow down or flat. Whether the prices will start a u-turn downwards is anyone guesses. But in my opinion, it may remain flat for some time like in post 2003 before it starts to go up again as land is scarce in Singapore and population is set to increase in future.

PM Lee suggests going the Beijing way to tackle low marriage, birth rates

A MATCHMAKING trend in Beijing has caught the Prime Minister's eye, and he floated the idea last night for Singapore to think about.

Mr Lee Hsien Loong described the phenomenon of Beijing parents secretly seeking spouses for their children at 'Parental Matchmaking Sessions' in parks.

Thousands of parents exchange the photos, resumes and phone numbers of their children, he said in his Mandarin speech at the National Day Rally.

The parents would then pass these phone numbers to their children, saying they came from colleagues, he added.

Perhaps Singapore parents too can play matchmaker for their children, doing it sensitively and with a helping hand from the People's Association (PA), he suggested.

There is no harm for the PA to give it a try and run similar activities for matchmaker-parents, he said, to loud applause.

Modern matchmakers have a role, he said.

In the past, he said, marriage was not viewed as a personal problem....

I was just testing out the site and I loved how easy it was to navigate around the website; it didn't take me long to find, for example, items such as a MACBOOK PRO with 4GB Ram at only $1200. Petrol prices are rising and falling and no one knows how long this yo-yo will last. ERP gantries are springing up as if there were ERP-trees that could sprout seedlings. Congestions are getting from bad to worse even with these gantries erected because traffic jams are simply directed from one road to another - and it won’t be for long before ERP-seeds are being planted there.

For car owners, this might be a good time to sell their cars and for aspiring car owners, this might be a good chance for them to lay their hands on a good deal. Either way, there’s always the difficulty of getting onto a common portal for them to buy and sell their cars. Would they have considered getting onto ST701?

News of ST701 first came to me when they decided to have beauty queen Miss Singapore World 2006 Colleen Francisca live in a 50 square-meters glass-walled house to show that a person can survive solely on the ads found on the ST701 classified ads site. I found it a little hard to believe because… how can anyone actually survive just on online services?! But she did! Not only that, but a lucky fellow actually got to spend some time with her and still walk away with a $1000! That’s probably one of the biggest scope for any guy out there.

So anyway, I decided to take a peep at ST701 because I had always been eyeing at the Suzuki Swift 1.5L

The home page is simple to navigate and I thought it’s nice and simple. Of course, I am saying this after I got a cultural shock at Straits Times’ new layout, which I think I’ll take some time to get used to. Clicking onto the Hatchback section, it returned a shortlist of all the hatchbacks that are available for sale now. I keyed in "Suzuki" at the search box on top, and it returned 4 pages of Suzuki Swifts! It does seem like there are a lot of people who are placing ads here!

With so much results, I was hoping that I’d be able to keep a few on my watch list. This was easily done by clicking on the heart-shaped icon that’s just next to the picture of the car. Moreover, if I wanted to do a comparison, I could just click on the graph icon that’s just next to the heart-shaped icon. Everything’s very easy and intuitive. If you are really lost on what the icons mean, you can just do a mouse-over on the icons and a tab will display what the icons mean.

While doing my comparison, I was asked to create a comparison table, which I think does make sense since I may be comparing other non-related things as well. There’s also a "Back to previous page" option which prevented me from getting lost on my searches. One of the things I hate most is to lost my search results, but I thought it’s quite well thought here. Adding new car sales for comparison is as easy as clicking on the correct comparison tables. Moreover, the pictures of the cars are actually visible in the table, so I’d know what cars I put in.

When I am done with putting cars into the table, I clicked on the table name and a nice comparison table is displayed. From here, I was able to compare the price, engine types, power, top speed and additional information amongst other things. Overall, I thought it was quite a pleasant experience as everything was very straight-forward and informative. The only peeve I had was on the part where I had to register… where in the midst of registration, I wasn’t able to go back to my search results after registration. However, I did manage to use the back button, so it’s not that bad.

ST701 gets my thumbs up as a comprehensive classified ads website which is as good as the print counterpart. Speaking of which, I wonder if I am able to find this car in ST701.

My Honest Opinion: ST701 needs to change and standardize their Job Ad template. Make it look more professional and tidy. Avoid offering employers value added service/ paid service such as posting their print job ads on ST701 as classifieds online ads (with newspaper icon). I can’t understand their actual direction. Online Medium cum Print Medium? Flexibility? Maybe additional exposure… I think so.

Pros: ST701 have other hot services such as posting their property/ cars/ shops online. Just like normal classified print ads. Like I said, everything at one go! Anything & Everything in ST701!

Cons: But I thought ST701 is originally a platform solely for Employers & Jobseekers. Chanced upon this headline in the New York Times of Dec 17, 2007. I think the headline is interesting on two counts. First is, why would the NY Times feature such a topic in its prime "shouting" space? Well, suggest that we leave this question well alone. Not interested lor ...

The second, and perhaps more engaging issue, is that the article, indirectly at least, revisits the perennial debate on personal responsibility. Just about how much responsibility should a person assume for the development of his life on various dimensions including the spiritual, emotional, economic and social?

In brief, the article's protagonists lament how their lives have been impaired by external spiritual forces/entities, thus their midnight services specially tailored to combat these undesirables.

Ignoring the religious slant, there is, to me, an underlying notion of helplessness pervading the group ethos. I can't achieve this, can't do that, and I'm mired in debauchery and crippling emotions ... because so-and-so has cursed me, trapped me - this "blame everyone else except myself" tone resounds throughout this little vignette of the disenfranchised. And if I might add, it's quite disheartening. Their helplessness perpetuates the pecking order, and keeps them at the fringes of society.

I'm morally and professionally obligated to uphold the view that we can and must take full responsibility for our own personal development. Avoiding responsibility (by pushing the blame to the supernatural for instance) would in time create a social conscience numbed and dulled by the burdens it refuses to bear upon itself, that is at the same time narcissistic and incapable of guilt. This outcome is, to me, morally deplorable, and functionally harmful to society.

On a professional front, questions that surface immediately to me are: Why are we advocating training? Why do we frequently produce advisories (e.g. in ST701 Jobs' Career Centre) to help people become more effective, happier and more balanced? The implicit assumption is quite obvious, which is that we can take control of and make our lives better.

Case, property body seek licensing of housing agents Calls come amid growing number of complaints lodged against agents

ON THE CARDS: Talks are under way to introduce regulatory measures that could be in the form of a standardised proficiency test for agents, says Mr Yeo.

A SHARPLY rising tide of consumer complaints against property agents has emerged in recent data, amid a spike in property sales in the current market boom. Complaints include claims of misrepresentation and a failure to explain contract terms and conditions fully, the consumer watchdog, the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case), said.

This has led to renewed calls by Case for a stronger industry watchdog to regulate the sector.
Case, together with the Institute of Estate Agents (IEA), is seeking the mandatory licensing of property agents in Singapore.
In the interim, IEA yesterday launched a new 'practising certificate' to all its members, aimed at boosting their credibility and giving homebuyers and sellers more confidence in agents' professionalism.
The IEA represents about 900 property agents in Singapore. Its president, Mr Jeff Foo, said mandatory regulation for estate agents was overdue, especially given the current property market's bullishness.
The IEA practising certificate will have the identification number of the agent who, as a member, is bound to adhere to the organisation's strict guidelines and code of conduct.
Case president Yeo Guat Kwang said yesterday at a public forum held by the IEA, that agents should be licensed individually. He said Case and IEA will 'push the message to the relevant authorities'.
Complaints lodged against estate agents have almost doubled in the last two years. Case received 991 complaints last year, up from 672 in 2005, and 469 in 2004.
So far this year, 557 complaints have been made.
Mr Yeo said some complainants claimed that unexplained contract clauses were added by the agents, such as changing the level of commission that had been agreed upon.
Mr Yeo, an MP for Aljunied GRC, also said that Case and IEA are already in talks to introduce more regulatory measures.
This could be in the form of a standardised proficiency test that every agent has to pass before being allowed to operate, he said.
Currently, there is no mandatory qualification or licence requirement for housing agents. To operate, an agent has to join a licensed property agency, whose licence is issued by the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore.
Mr Yeo told The Straits Times: 'Even taxi drivers have to fulfil certain criteria before they can operate. What more for property agents, who deal with the hard-earned life savings of Singaporeans.'
Even if rogue agents were sacked, they could join another agency because of the lack of a central body to regulate these agents, he added.
Mr Yeo said IEA's new initiative was a good way to encourage self-regulation, and encouraged consumers to choose agents with such recognition.
To boost membership numbers, the IEA also announced a new tie-up with NTUC yesterday, which enables IEA members to enjoy social benefits under the NTUC.
NTUC's secretary-general, Mr Lim Swee Say, who was at the signing of the memorandum of understanding yesterday, said that through IEA, NTUC can now extend its membership to agents.
He said this was another step closer towards the labour movement's 2011 vision of an all-inclusive membership for workers of all backgrounds.

While I enjoy many cuisines, I have to confess my favourite would be Thai. There is something about the blending of flavours -- lemon grass, seafood and even the chilli padi -- in Thai food that makes me salivate every time I think about it. In fact, I need to get my fix of Thai food at least once a fortnight. Yes, that's how bad it is.

Of course, like most people who enjoy Thai food, I have a weakness for green curry and tom yam soup. And I tasted some of the best green curry and tom yam soup on a recent trip to Bangkok. A friend was getting married to a local, and she tipped us Thai-food-fans off about the food court at MBK shopping centre. The place is great, and I would recommend it to anyone who's visiting Bangkok. The shopping centre isn't the best but the food court on top is amazing: very clean, well managed, very affordable and with an array of stalls that will satisfy anyone. However, it is the Thai stalls that do the most business... and I was in line too!

I tried the green curry, the phad thai and the tom yam soup. It was all so good that I kept going back to MBK for my meals. I kept trying to figure out the ingredients used, and the proportions they are used in. I have even checked Thai cookbooks and surfed the Net for recipes for green curry so that I can replicate my MBK meals.

Here is one that I found:

Episode: Tyler Thai'd Up

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, cut in 8 wedges
1 green bell pepper, cut in 8 wedges
1 stalk lemongrass, white bulb only
1 tablespoon coarsely chopped fresh ginger
3 tablespoons Thai green curry paste, recipe follows
2 kaffir lime leaves
3 cups unsweetened coconut milk, 2 (13.5 ounce) cans
3/4 cup chicken broth
1 1/2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut in 1-inch strips
Sea salt
1 lime, juiced
Fresh Thai basil leaves
Fresh cilantro leaves
Lime wedges, for garnish

Place a large, deep skillet over medium heat and coat with the oil. Saute the onion and green peppers for 3 minutes to soften. Split the piece of lemongrass down the middle and whack it with the flat side of a knife to open the flavor. Add the lemongrass, ginger, curry paste and lime leaves to the skillet and stir for 2 minutes. Pour in the coconut milk and chicken broth. Lay the chicken pieces in the mixture to poach; add a pinch of salt. Stir together and simmer over low heat for 10 to 15 minutes. Squeeze in the lime juice and shower with basil and cilantro; serve in dinner bowls with lime wedges.

Thai Green Curry Paste:
2 tablespoons coriander seeds
1 tablespoon cumin seeds
1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns
8 fresh Thai green chiles
2 shallots, coarsely chopped
4 garlic cloves, smashed
Small handful of fresh cilantro sprigs
2-inch piece galangal, peeled and coarsely chopped
2 lemon grass stalks, white part only, coarsely chopped
2 kaffir lime leaves, torn
2 teaspoons dried shrimp paste
1/2 cup water

Heat the coriander, cumin seeds, and peppercorns in a small dry skillet for 2 minutes until fragrant. Put the seeds in a clean coffee grinder or spice mill and buzz the spices to a powder.
Put the spice blend and remaining ingredients in a food processor, and pulse to combine. Pour in the water to help grind everything down into a paste.

Yield: 1 1/2 cups

Time: 10 am Lady with bags of freebies came along. Balloons and papers spilling her paperbags (already? dont you think it is still too early). Anyway, she wanted to play ST701 game. Stood by, looked at her, she didnt win anything at all. She turned to me ask for freebie Classified bags. I took one and pass it to her, smiling. She asked for another one. Oh well, gave to her another one. Didnt really expect she was one of those, you know, freebie hunters (ssshhhh..)

Time: 1245 noon Queue was getting longer for the game. My colleague did a good job in becoming Vanna White (wheel of fortune). Some didnt even know what they were queuing up for. But it was all good. Draws the crowd in.

Time: 5 odd Same lady (the one that came in at 10 am) came along while I was clearing some stuff. 'Hey, hey, I want the bags?' I said 'Sorry, no.' (Well, she has already gotten 2, don't you think it is enough for her?) Her face was black. I got back to, well, clearing my stuff. My knight in shining armour (my boss) came along and ask what happen. Told him that the lady wants more bags.

Time: 5 odd still Little drama begins. She stares at the knight as if she could eat him up alive!! (gobble, gobble). When my boss refuses to give the bags to her, she asks for his designation, contact details and such. My boss gave his details. Then she walks like half a metre away and returns to ask for the Director's name with finger pointing at his face (for goodness sake lady, its just a bag).

~ Well people, it's just freebies. Do not get ballistic or brutal over freebies. It just looks awful on you.. Have some dignity.

ZOUK - can there be any substitutes??

Having defined the clubbing dictionary and itinerary for years, who would have ever thought that mega phenomenon Zouk’ s position will ever be shaken. Well, with new kids coming into this playground ( no names shall be mentioned, but we firmly believe you guys are geniuses ) once comfortably dominated by the party institution, perhaps it’s time to reassess their accolades. No offense, but being Singaporeans, incumbency is a sin we’re terribly guilty of.

Armed with newer and fresher interior, the Zouk vibe has taken on a more party paradise feel, as opposed to the almost-cold stone structure it used to be. Having gone through renovations late last year, the warehouse building carries off the aura of Greek tranquility, with sun signs being placed on the walls and pebbled structures being erected sporadically. Naturally, the place is still built for a good party time with ample space given for dancing and platforms taking center stage, right smack in the middle of the hall. You will definitely feel like you’re on an island resort, albeit with rooftops.

Contrasting to the main hall, Phuture has a feel so avant-garde that Snoop Dogg should consider it for its next video. Oddly-shaped and brightly coloured chairs line the perimeters with low seats being available for those who really just want to people watch. A display screen that plays off light works is hung on the wall to add to the street factor seen on MTV. And ultimately, there’s the elusive Velvet Underground. Famed for housing the most gorgeous crowd ever and the who’s-who of almost any industry, the allure of Velvet is undeniable. Its sinful Garden of Eden theme will send hints of envy, beauty and glamour pulsating through the system of any Velvet virgin. At its barest forms, Zouk has it all laid out for you, particularly if you’re slightly schizo when it comes to your personal identity.

True to any clubbing mogul’s dream, Zouk still manages to retain the crowd that it had taken so long to cajole and please. Reaching full capacity almost every night, it is hard to believe that this is the same club that has been around for so long, while others have gone down faster than your tequila shots. The festivities still ride high here. To categorise the gragantuan amount of 'Zoukies' is the equivalent of trying to fix a square into a circle, and we are no magicians. Safe to say, the place is a free-for-all. Staggeringly multi-faceted, the main segregation for these party people can be seen in the different rooms. One thing’s for sure, these nocturnal creatures, despite where they choose to go, usually come to impress. So be prepared to see the most stylish people around and leave those wife beaters at home, unless they’re paired with a lot of bling.

Clued-in alcohol connoisseurs will probably be glad to know that the drinks here still maintain the lethal potency that it always had. Well, for most of them, at least. The drinks quality within the complex is never compromised, even during the mad rush for one-for-one deals. Word of caution, though. Opportunist streaks surface in the face of cheap offers, so getting staff attention will be quite the feat. Along with that, the Wine Bar, famed lounge bar of the media crowd, leaves questionable doubts in the throats of any vodka or bourbon purveyor. The disparity between Wine Bar and other rooms can be quite jarring, with the former risking being too diluted or too strong at times.

Undoubtedly, this highly-listed party central is known for their ill-est parties, having brought in big names like Paul Oakenfold, John Digweed and famed duo Groove Armada onto their decks before. But that being said, their resident DJs can still hold a candle to the celebrity spinners. Aldrin, Brendon P and Andrew Chow have garnered enough street cred to have a religious following, and this is rightfully so. Churning out tunes with nuances of familiarity, and taking it on a whole different level with their moments of brilliances, they are forces to be reckoned with. Coupled with a superb sound system, they will lay out a soundtrack so wicked for your night, that you have no choice but to groove it out amidst the sweaty bodies.

Truth be told, it is hard to pinpoint where the main allure of Zouk lies in. Many factors come together to form its winning formula. Maybe it’s the way it manages to retain its cool-yet-accessible factor despite all the hoo haas that have been given to them. Maybe it’s just the way that they only seemed to get better with each party and each year. Whatever it is, being considered as the gauge meter for every new club that opens up speaks volume in itself. That, plus every other factors coming together, means that Zouk is still the definitive of club monsterism. So yeah, while you may get distracted by the newer things out there, Zouk is still the casa you will want to return to.

Probably it’s just one or 2 salesmen who use such underhand methods but better to avoid the stall totally or be sorry!

Here is my own personal account: On 21st Apr, my husband with a group of friends decided to have some durians after dinner at Geylang and we headed straight to the nearest stall XXX TRADING. Turned out to be a big mistake! My husband went off to choose the durians after we found a table. Once my husband approached this hooligan, he took out his parang to open a durian and ask my husband to try, my husband asked him how much was it but he said "never mind just try first", so my husband commented not bad....immediately, this hooligan picked up 5 durians and put into a basket, weighed it and brought it to our tables despite my husband repeated questioning on the price. No replies given.

At our table, he opened up another and asked me and another gal friend (who's carrying a less than a yr old baby) to try the durians and so we tried. He asked whether nice, we said yes, not bad and immediately he started opening up another durian and said, "see confirm good one this one"! We asked him about the price then only at that time he told us that it’s $20 per kg!!! So we asked him the whole basket how heavy, and guess what??? 10kg, and there were only 5 durians inside! We say we don’t want and he said cannot because durian opened already and he already keyed in the sales and can’t return.

Then keep explaining to us this is really good durian and worth eating while picking up another to open. This time we raised our voice and told him if he don't stop opening, we will leave immediately. Only then he stopped and say, never mind, he'll return the other 2 unopened one, but the rest of the three durians we have to take....wah piang...and we thought just a while ago he said key in order already cannot returned??????

Anyway, we were very angry and everything happened too fast for us to react, we finished up the 3 durians which in the end cost us $140/- , we didn't enjoy the durians at all. We hope to prevent anyone from becoming victims again to this “hard-selling” tactics so beware of those Geylang stalls especially XXX Trading. One of our friends who joined us later said that he experienced the same thing too from the same stall once.]

Want to make an effective ad? Don't make these common mistakes.

Even though our focus is advertising for small to medium companies, most of these no-nos apply to all businesses, irrespective of size.

Borrowed interest.

Avoid trying to associate yourself with things that have no relevance to what you do. If you’re in the roofing business, talk about roofing, show roofing, and explain how you’re the world’s unmatched authority on roofing. Don’t show pictures of animals and babies. I don’t care what you’ve read in other books, animals and babies might get people’s attention, but unless they’re in the market for one, these cute and cuddly objects won’t help you make a sale. Don’t talk about your ancestors, where you grew up, or where you went to school—unless you graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the National Roofing Academy. Stick to what you’re best at—roofing.

Event sales.

Refrain from jumping on this bandwagon. Even if it is the 1,200th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Blognovia, this event has no relevance to the fact that for the next week you are having a four-for-two sale on hubcaps. Far better to simply spell out the great savings customers can get while making their ’65 Valiant look like it just came out of the showroom. Far too much local retail advertising, including that from our favorite villains, the car dealerships, falls into this trap. If you’re going to have a sale, have a sale. What’s the point of having a Presidents’ Day Sale when every other retailer is having a Presidents’ Day Sale on exactly the same Presidents’ Day?And even when it’s not used as an excuse for a sale, try to avoid falling into the trap of running the same advertising and promotional themes everyone else is running because they woke up one morning and found they were seven days away from St. Valentine’s Day. The worst example of this is when the Olympics roll around every four years and everyone starts running ads with inane headlines such as “Blogs Electric is going for the gold” or “At VideoRama we’re raising the bar to new heights.” Remember, it’s all about standing out, not blending in.

Ego trips.

Don’t put yourself in the advertising. You think you’re great. Your family thinks you’re great. Even you’re employees think you’re great. (Would they tell you otherwise, even if they thought you were an imbecile?) But guess what? Your prospective customers don’t know you from a hole in the wall, and your smiling face isn’t going to convince them you have the best stuff within 100 miles. Any time I see a CEO or company president in an ad, I can smell the desperation oozing out of the page. Either the person pictured in the ad is suffering from a bad case of egomania or the ad agency has reached the stage were the client has turned down the last dozen campaigns and out of desperation they come up with the what-the-heck-do-we-do-now chestnut, “Hey CJ, why don’t we feature you in the ad? Kinda serious, but approachable, on the factory floor, or walking on a beach looking out to sea, the visionary thing, maybe in a black turtleneck, very Steve Jobs-ish. Waddya think, CJ?” Don’t ever go there. It never works. Smart CEOs save themselves for PR. Look at The Donald of Trump and Branson of Virgin; they’re everywhere, except in their own ads.

SAN FRANCISCO - For the last 14 months, high-tech insiders have been eating up the work of an anonymous blogger who assumed the persona of Steven P. Jobs, Apple's CEO.

The mysterious writer has used his blog, the Secret Diary Of Steve Jobs, to lampoon the CEO and his reputation as a difficult and egotistical leader, as well as skewer other high-tech companies, tech journalists, venture capitalists, open-source software fanatics and Silicon Valley's overall aura of excess.

The acerbic postings of Fake Steve, as he is known, have attracted a plugged-in readership - both the real Jobs and Bill Gates have acknowledged reading the blog ( fakesteve.blogspot.com ).

At the same time, Fake Steve has evaded the best efforts of Silicon Valley's gossips to discover his real identity.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, Daniel Lyons, a senior editor at Forbes magazine who lives near Boston, has been quietly enjoying the attention.

'I'm stunned that it's taken this long,' said Lyons, 46, when a reporter interrupted his vacation in Maine on Sunday to ask him about Fake Steve. 'I have not been that good at keeping it a secret. I've been sort of waiting for this call for months.'

Lyons writes and edits technology articles for Forbes and is the author of two works of fiction, including a 1998 novel, Dog Days...

Guided Tour - Youtube Help Centre

Found this on the youtube website, while looking through their video upload specifications. It introduces and gives a face to the help centre, and warmly encourages users to provide feedback in addition to help needs.

I guess it expands the idea of help to include user feedback on problems and suggested improvements.

The next video is more informative, while being entertaining. It seems like a lot of effort to get across just a few main points though. And of course, all these videos are accompanied with FAQs, menu lists and information sidebars.

Not saying to go for this wholesale, but it's an interesting new perspective to online help. More like a "User Centre" than a "Help Centre". Part of the overall experience, rather than just a helping place for problems or questions.

Media-Rich Classfieds

Information wants to travel, from person to person to person, as fast and as faithfully to its original form as possible. Trying to jam reality into a 3 line run-on ad has it's limitations. The more forms of media available to information-posters, the greater their chances of making a connection on the other side of the information window.

Text, photos, audio-music, videos laid out on the world wide web have the potential to blast open the narrow doors of perception inherent in traditional classfieds media. For this to happen, the following 3 elements have to be present:

1. The Media-Rich Information Marketplace (st701)

The central hub where media-rich information can be collected, laid-out and stored, inclusiuve of pathways for the posters and end-users to navigate through. Information wants to be free, but sustainability requires web sensitive business models built into the system.

2. Advertiser/Poster Empowerment

Apart from easy posting and payment options, posters need to be familliar with using multimedia elements to further their information dissemination needs, be it recruiting talent or promotingt a product or service. To begin with, they will need more than technical skills, and templates or examples from the marketplace, or even high-end users.

3. User Empowerment

Users need to be able to filter the increased levels of information coming at them in this medcia rich environment, with intelligent searching and browsing. Furthermore, while the marketplace can do some policing of postings, ultimately users need to be media-literate and discerning enough not to be monkeyed out.

The future marketplace is going to be an interesting place... Glad to have an opportunity to play a part in it. :-)
